About
I built the thing I needed my first year of 1099 work.
I’m Afan Rashid, a recent University of Maryland graduate. I work as a 1099 contractor, which means nothing is taken out of my pay. No employer is doing the math or holding anything back for taxes. That part is now my job.
My first year, I spent money I should have set aside. When I talked to other people doing the same kind of work, I kept hearing the same thing: they wished something had worked out the number before the quarterly or year-end bill arrived, instead of after.
So I built Setaside. It reads your deposits, estimates what you’ll owe for self-employment, federal, and state tax, reminds you before each quarterly deadline, and keeps your records organized the way a CPA files them.
What Setaside is, and isn’t
- It’s software, not a bank. Your money never leaves accounts you own. We can read transactions; we can’t move a dollar.
- It’s an estimate, not a promise. Real tax rules applied to your real numbers, which beats a flat 30% guess. But taxes have too many variables for anyone to promise an exact figure, and we won’t.
- It works with accountants. We handle the year; a CPA handles the return. We’re working toward a partner CPA who files straight from your Setaside records.
